How to Make a Sacramento Bee Water Station That Pollinators Actually Use (Heat Wave Guide)

A bee water station in Sacramento only works if it does four things: gives bees a place to stand, smells like water bees are looking for, sits somewhere they can find and remember, and never runs dry. Get those four right and a $6 plant saucer will have honey bees, sweat bees, and butterflies lined up on it within a week. Miss one and you get what most people quietly end up with — a decorative bee bath no bee ever visits.

Mid-September is not too late to start. Sacramento's average high this month is still 88.5°F, the city logged eight 100-degree days in September 2024, and the all-time record of 116°F fell on September 6, 2022. Natural water — dew, creek edges, puddles, irrigation runoff — has been gone since June, and colonies are now raising the long-lived bees that carry them through winter. Do Bees Need Water in Summer? What Sacramento Bees Actually Use It For

Honey bees do not drink water the way a dog does. Most of what a colony collects never passes through a bee's gut. It goes toward three jobs, and the biggest one is air conditioning.

  • Evaporative cooling. The brood nest must stay between 93°F and 95°F or developing bees die. When outside air climbs past the mid-90s, fanning alone stops working, so house bees spread droplets across the comb and fan them dry — the same physics as a swamp cooler on a Sacramento roof.
  • Diluting honey. Stored honey is about 18 percent water. Nurse bees need it thinner to feed larvae and to eat themselves, which is why bees still collect water on warm winter days when nothing is blooming.
  • Brood food. The jelly nurse bees produce for larvae is mostly water. A colony with 30,000 larvae in late summer has a standing water bill.

The scale surprises people. A water forager carries about 50 microliters per trip — one drop. European field measurements put a typical colony at 200 to 250 milliliters a day, roughly 5,000 trips. On a 100-degree day a large colony can run past a liter, which is 20,000 round trips by a workforce that would rather be gathering nectar.

Two recent studies frame why timing matters. A 2025 paper in Animal Behaviour (Le Bivic and colleagues, INRAE) tracked colony water collection across three seasons and found it jumps sharply once the daily high passes 31.5°C — 88.7°F. And Cornell researchers Ostwald, Smith, and Seeley showed in 2016 that colonies keep almost no water in reserve: when they cut off water access to a colony under heat stress, brood nest temperature climbed 1.3 to 2.6°C per hour. A colony cannot stockpile water the way it stockpiles honey. It has to get it today.

Native bees have a different relationship with water. Most of Sacramento's solitary bees get moisture from nectar and rarely carry water, but they use damp stones and mud at a station for salts and, in the case of mason bees each spring, for nest-building material. The station is primarily a honey bee tool; native bees are the bonus. Why Sacramento's Natural Water Disappears by September

Sacramento averages about 18 inches of rain a year, and almost none of it falls when bees need it. The NOAA 1991–2020 normals for Sacramento Executive Airport show 0.23 inches in June, 0.00 in July, 0.04 in August, and 0.09 in September. Meanwhile evaporative demand measured by the state's CIMIS network runs 7.8 to 8.7 inches a month in June and July and is still 5.7 inches in September. Every puddle, gutter, and low spot that held water in spring is bone dry by the Fourth of July.

What is left for bees in a Sacramento neighborhood in September is a short list: the rivers and their creeks (too far for most colonies), leaking irrigation valves, early-morning sprinkler overspray, air-conditioner condensate drips, dog bowls, fountains, and swimming pools. Pools win because they are big, they smell strongly of chlorine and sunscreen, and they are always full. The Delta breeze usually bails colonies out with a 30-degree overnight drop; in a true heat wave it fails, lows stay in the 70s, and bees never get off cooling duty. Why Most Bee Baths Sit Empty

Our habitat team has checked on water stations at dozens of Sacramento school gardens and volunteer yards since 2020, and the ones that sit ignored fail for the same six reasons almost every time.

1. Bees drown in it

Honey bees cannot swim and cannot lift off from open water. A bath with a smooth bottom and half an inch of open water kills the first scouts that try it — and a scout that does not come home does not recruit her sisters. Landing material is not decoration. It is the difference between a station and a trap.

2. The water is too clean

This runs against instinct. Honey bee water foragers actively prefer water with minerals and smell over pure tap water. Pierre Lau and James Nieh at UC San Diego showed in 2016 that water foragers responded most strongly to sodium at 1.5 to 3 percent and magnesium at 1.5 percent, while potassium and phosphate put them off. A Tufts University team led by Rachael Bonoan found in 2017 that honey bees prefer "dirty" water year-round for its sodium, and that their preference for calcium, magnesium, and potassium spikes in autumn when pollen — their usual mineral source — is scarce. A rinsed dish of filtered water has no signature. A dish with a pinch of salt and a little soil does.

3. It is in the wrong spot

Deep shade under a patio cover, a windy side yard, the middle of a hot slab, or right next to where you eat dinner — all of these get a station ignored or moved. Bees locate water partly by scent and partly by the shimmer of a wet surface, and both work best with a few hours of sun.

4. It keeps moving

A water forager memorizes a location and communicates it to the hive with the same waggle dance used for flowers. Move the dish six feet to mow around it and you have erased a map that took days to build. Pick the spot once.

5. It started after the pool did

Water foragers show strong site fidelity. A colony that found your neighbor's pool in June will keep going back all summer, even with a perfect station 30 feet closer. The fix is patience and the mineral cue — and next spring, get the station out before pool season opens.

6. It went dry

A dry dish in a heat wave is worse than no dish. Scouts that find it empty stop advertising it, and the colony re-routes to whatever else it can find. Two dry days in July can cost you traffic that took three weeks to build. This is the most common failure, which is why the design section below is mostly about capacity.

How to Make a Bee Water Station: Step by Step

This is the basic DIY bee bath — a pebble saucer — that we start every site with. It costs under $10, takes 15 minutes, and works on an apartment balcony as well as a Carmichael half-acre. Bigger designs are compared in the next section.

What you need

  • A shallow container 8 to 14 inches across and 1 to 2 inches deep: a terracotta or glazed plant saucer, a pie plate, or the drip tray from a large pot. Light colors stay cooler; glazed or plastic surfaces resist algae better than raw terracotta.
  • Enough landing material to fill it: river pebbles, aquarium gravel, glass marbles, wine corks, or a mix. Corks float and follow the water level down as the dish evaporates, which is a real advantage.
  • A pinch of plain sea salt or kosher salt (not iodized, not seasoned) and a spoonful of garden soil.
  • Something to lift it 12 to 30 inches off the ground: a stump, an overturned pot, a cinder block, or a plant stand.
  • Optional: one drop of lemongrass essential oil on the first fill. It mimics the bees' own Nasonov "this way" scent — beekeeper experience rather than controlled evidence, but it costs nothing.

Step 1: Fill the dish with landing material

Pour in pebbles or marbles until they mound slightly above the rim in the center and sit level at the edges. You want more stone than water. A bee should be able to walk from the rim to the middle without touching open water.

Step 2: Add water to just below the tops of the stones

Pour slowly until the water sits about a quarter inch below the highest stones. Bees drink from the film that wicks up between pebbles, not from a pool. If you can see a mirror-flat sheet of water bigger than a quarter, add more stones.

Step 3: Season it

Stir in a small pinch of salt — a quarter teaspoon per quart is plenty, well under the concentrations the UC San Diego study tested but enough to give the water a mineral taste — and drop in a spoonful of soil from a garden bed. The soil clouds the water slightly and adds the calcium, magnesium, and potassium fall bees are hunting for. Do not use pool salt, water-softener salt, or anything with additives.

Step 4: Place it

Pick a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, within 50 feet of your best flowering plants, at least 20 feet from patios, play areas, and doors, and visible from a window you look out of every day. That last rule is not sentimental: in our experience, stations you can see from the kitchen sink get refilled and stations behind the garage do not. Set it on the stump or pot so it sits above ground level, out of the dog's reach and easy for bees to spot on approach.

Step 5: Leave it alone

Do not move it. Do not "improve" the location after two days of no visitors. It commonly takes 5 to 10 days for a scout to find a new station and a few more for traffic to build. If nothing has shown up after two weeks, work through the troubleshooting list at the end of this article before relocating.

Step 6: Set a refill rhythm you will keep

In September heat a saucer this size loses a quarter to a third of an inch a day in the sun. Refill every one to two days, and daily when the forecast tops 100°F. Every third day, dump it completely, scrub the stones and dish with a brush and plain water, and refill with fresh water and a fresh pinch of salt. That one cycle handles algae and mosquitoes together.

A Carmichael homeowner called our hotline in August 2025 about "hundreds of bees" in her backyard pool every afternoon. Our field team traced them to a colony in a neighbor's valley oak about 300 feet away. We set a pebble saucer with salt and soil at her fence line on the side facing the oak, and she kept it topped off every morning. By the end of the second week the pool traffic had thinned to a handful of bees, and by September the station had more visitors than the pool did.

Bee Water Station Designs Compared: Which One Fits Your Yard

The pebble saucer's weakness is capacity. In a Sacramento heat wave it can go dry between a Friday morning refill and Saturday afternoon, and if you travel it will fail. These are the five designs we see in Sacramento yards, with honest numbers on how often each needs attention at 95 to 100°F.

The poultry waterer: our pick for heat waves

A one-gallon plastic chicken waterer from any feed store is the best upgrade for the money. The inverted reservoir feeds a shallow ring trough by vacuum, so the trough stays at a constant level for four to six days. Fill the ring with marbles or aquarium gravel for footing, add salt to the reservoir, and set it on a block in the shade. It is what we use at school gardens over summer break, when nobody is on campus to refill a saucer.

The drip emitter: the beekeeper standard

If you already run drip irrigation, add a 1-gallon-per-hour emitter on a short riser that drips onto a rough board, brick, or flat rock set at a slight angle. The surface stays wet during every irrigation cycle and dries in between, so there is never standing water for mosquitoes and never a dry dish for bees. This is how most Sacramento hobby beekeepers meet the county's 15-foot water rule, and it works just as well in a yard with no hives.

The mini pond: most habitat value, most upkeep

A half wine barrel with a pond liner, a few floating plants, and a cork or two becomes a small wetland for bees, dragonflies, birds, and frogs. It also holds enough water to breed mosquitoes seriously. Where to Put a Bee Water Station in a Sacramento Yard

Placement decides more than design does. These are the rules we follow when we site a station at a new garden, roughly in order of how often each turns out to be the problem.

  • Morning sun, afternoon shade. Water in full afternoon sun on a 100-degree day heats past the point bees will use it and evaporates twice as fast. Water in deep shade all day is hard for scouts to find. The east side of a fence, tree, or house is ideal.
  • Near flowers, not near people. Within 50 feet of your heaviest-blooming plants and at least 20 feet from patios, doors, and play areas. Bees will not bother anyone at a station, but yellow jackets in September will.
  • Off the ground. A stump, pot, block, or stand at 12 to 30 inches keeps it out of the dog's reach, off the hot slab, and easier for bees to see on approach.
  • Out of the sprinkler pattern. Overspray floods the dish, washes out the salt, and floats the corks over the rim.
  • Downwind of the hive, if you know where it is. Bees leaving a colony in a neighbor's wall or oak find water on the downwind side first, because that is where the scent travels.
  • Two is better than one on a large lot. A station on each side of the house means no bee has to cross the yard, and if one goes dry the colony does not lose the whole map.

One placement note for this time of year: if you have already noticed yellow jackets around outdoor meals, put the station on the far side of the yard from your dining area now. How Do I Help Bees During a Heat Wave? The 100°F Protocol

Sacramento's heat waves are getting longer. The city recorded 45 days at or above 100°F in 2024, breaking the record of 44 set in 2022, against a typical year of around two dozen. When the National Weather Service posts an excessive heat warning, this is what we ask our volunteers to do at home.

  • Add a second station before the heat arrives, in the shadiest spot you have. Evaporation roughly doubles, and shade is the only thing that keeps water usable through the afternoon.
  • Refill morning and evening. Do the morning fill before 8 a.m., when water foragers are already flying, and the evening top-off after 7 p.m. when traffic tapers.
  • Do not spray anything. Not the aphids on the roses, not the ants on the patio. Heat-stressed colonies have no margin, and bees forage late into the evening in a heat wave.
  • Leave bearding colonies alone. A curtain of bees hanging on the outside of a hive, wall, or trunk in the evening is the colony moving bodies out so the interior can cool. It is not a swarm and it is not aggression.
  • Skip the mister and the wet towels. Misting a hive entrance or draping wet towels over a wall with bees in it blocks ventilation and confuses the colony's own cooling system. A station 15 to 30 feet away does the job without the interference.
  • Watch the pool. A sudden jump to dozens or hundreds of bees at a pool, spa, fountain, or pet bowl means an established colony is close and under stress. That colony is a candidate for free relocation, not extermination.

Keeping the Station Mosquito-Free in West Nile Country

Sacramento County records West Nile virus in mosquitoes every summer, and the vector control district has also been tracking invasive Aedes mosquitoes, which breed in container water as small as a bottle cap. A neglected bee bath is exactly the kind of container they like. The fix is timing, not chemicals.

  • A mosquito needs roughly seven to ten days of undisturbed standing water to go from egg to flying adult in Sacramento heat. Dumping and refilling every three days breaks the cycle every time, with margin.
  • Scrub, do not just top off. Eggs and larvae cling to the sides of the dish and the stones. Tip everything into a bucket, brush the stones under a hose, and refill. Ninety seconds.
  • For anything holding more than a gallon — bird baths, troughs, barrels — drop in a Bti mosquito dunk. Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis kills mosquito larvae and is labeled safe for bees, birds, pets, and people. One dunk treats about 100 square feet of surface for 30 days.
  • For ponds and barrels, get mosquitofish. They are free to Sacramento and Yolo county residents from the vector control district, and a technician will size the delivery to your water feature.
  • Never pour bleach, oil, or dish soap into a station to kill larvae. You will kill bees too.

From Heat Wave to Fall: Maintaining the Station Through Sacramento's Transition

Late September in Sacramento is a hinge. The first real cool-down usually lands in mid-October, but 95-degree days keep showing up until then, and colonies are shifting to winter mode at the same time: the queen slows her laying, foragers are replaced by long-lived "winter bees," and the colony's mineral needs change.

That last point is where the Tufts research earns its keep. Bonoan's team found that honey bee preference for calcium, magnesium, and potassium rises in autumn, when pollen — the colony's main source of those minerals — gets scarce. In Sacramento, September and October are a pollen dearth for most colonies until coyote brush, rabbitbrush, and late buckwheat come on. Through October, drop the refill cadence to every two to three days and keep the three-day scrub. From November on, rain refills the dish for you and the job becomes a weekly check for leaves. Do not put the station away. Honey bees fly and collect water whenever the temperature clears about 55°F, which in Sacramento is most winter afternoons, and a colony that can get water 20 feet from home in December does not have to send foragers on long cold flights that many do not survive. When spring comes, the station is already in place, already known to the colony, and already ahead of pool season — which solves failure reason number five before it starts.

Troubleshooting: Why Bees Are Not Using Your Water Station

  • No bees after two weeks. Add the salt and soil if you skipped them, confirm the dish gets a few hours of sun so the wet surface is visible and the scent carries, and move it closer to blooming plants at the next refill. Then wait another week.
  • Bees drowning. Too much open water. Add more pebbles or a handful of corks and drop the level to a quarter inch below the stones.
  • Bees still going to the pool. They found the pool first and are loyal to it. Keep the station full every day, add a drop of lemongrass oil at the next fill, and keep the pool covered for a few consecutive days if you can. Most colonies switch within two to three weeks; the rest switch in spring if the station is out before the pool opens.
  • Green slime. Too much afternoon sun or too long between scrubs. Shift it into shade and hold the three-day cycle.
  • Wrigglers in the water. Mosquito larvae. Dump, scrub, refill, and set a phone reminder for every three days. Add a Bti dunk if the dish holds more than a gallon.
  • Only wasps show up. Normal in September. Move the station away from the patio and add a second one nearer the flowers. Do not spray the wasps at the dish; honey bees will start using it within days.
  • Dry every morning. The dish is too small for the season. Upgrade to a poultry waterer or add a second saucer, and float corks so the surface stays usable as the level drops.

Mosquitoes only breed if water stands undisturbed for about a week or more, so dumping and scrubbing every three days prevents them entirely. For bigger baths and ponds, add a Bti dunk or request free mosquitofish from the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District.

Should I put sugar in a bee water station?

Never. Sugar water starts robbing between colonies, spreads disease, draws yellow jackets and ants, and can contaminate honey. Plain water with a pinch of salt or a little soil is all a station should hold. Feeding syrup is something beekeepers do inside their own hives, not in a dish in the yard.

A water station is the cheapest thing on our habitat checklist, and in a September heat wave it is also one of the most effective. If you want to do more, our volunteer crews install water stations, native plantings, and bee hotels at Sacramento schools and community gardens every month, and every hive we relocate for free is funded by people who decided this was worth $10 a month.

Tom Nguyen coordinates habitat restoration and community education for The Bee Conservatory across Sacramento County. He has trained more than 400 volunteers in pollinator-safe field practices, designed and installed pollinator habitat — including bee water stations — at more than 30 Sacramento school and community gardens, and worked with UC Cooperative Extension Sacramento on bee-safe landscaping demonstrations.
