How to Start a Pollinator Garden at Your Sacramento School

The combination we recommend for most K-5 campuses is one 4-foot by 8-foot raised bed right next to the building where kids can touch, smell, and weed, plus a 3-foot by 15-foot in-ground strip along a sunny fence where the real native plant habitat lives. Step 2 — Plant List: What to Grow for Sacramento Bees

Here is the non-negotiable rule: plant natives, not big-box store nursery annuals. Aim for at least one species blooming in every month from February through October. That is the rule that turns a garden into a habitat. If every plant in your bed flowers the same six weeks in April and May, the bees visit hard, then leave, and your garden goes quiet for five months. Plants to Avoid at Sacramento Schools

The two biggest line items are lumber for the raised bed and the native plants themselves. A garden without curriculum is a liability — something the grounds crew has to mow around. A garden with curriculum is the most memorable learning experience many kids have in elementary school. Grades K-2: Observation and Wonder

Kids this age are natural observers. Pair each class visit with a single question: "How many different kinds of bees can you count in five minutes?" "Which flower has the most visitors today?" "What color is the pollen on that bee's leg?" Give each student a simple tally sheet and a magnifying glass. After three or four visits they will start recognizing individual species without any formal instruction. This hits NGSS standards around patterns, observation, and structure-function (petals, stamens, wings).

Grades 3-5: Data and Pollinator Jobs

Upper elementary students are ready for structured data collection. Use a weekly pollinator count on a printed data sheet — date, weather, species spotted, flowers in bloom. After six weeks, graph the results. Students discover on their own that warmer days have more bee visits and that different flowers peak on different weeks. This is real ecology, not worksheets. Add a food-science layer by asking: which of the foods in today's cafeteria lunch depend on bees? Grades 6-8: Research Projects and Habitat Design

Step 5 — The Summer Survival Plan

This is where almost every school garden fails. Classes end in early June. Sacramento hits 95 to 105 degrees through July and August. The kids are gone, the teacher is on vacation, and the garden bakes. Established native plants can survive the heat, but first-year plantings cannot go more than a few days without water in Central Valley summer. You need a plan in writing before you plant a single seed.

  • Install drip irrigation on a battery-powered timer before planting day — not after — and run it on a schedule the grounds crew does not have to touch. Two 15-minute cycles per week is usually enough for established natives after year one.
  • Recruit a summer watering team of 3 to 5 parents or older students, each taking one week of check-ins. Build a shared calendar and a group text thread. This matters more than any other single decision.
  • Lean heavily on the in-ground native strip instead of the raised bed for summer survival — natives in the ground with deep roots pull moisture from lower soil layers and survive heat waves that kill container plants.
  • Mulch 3 inches deep with wood chips around every plant to cut evaporation by roughly 50% in Sacramento summers.
  • Plant in October or November, not April, whenever possible — California natives establish through winter rains and are much more drought-hardy by the time summer arrives.

The October planting rule is the single biggest predictor of whether a school garden makes it to year two. What Happens After Year One

Once a school pollinator garden is past its first summer, it stops needing much from anyone. The plants get bigger, the bloom windows overlap, and the bees start arriving on their own — often in surprising numbers. The most common mistake in year two is over-maintaining. Cutting back plants too aggressively, pulling self-seeded poppies as weeds, spraying anything on the garden, or mulching over the bare-ground patches that native ground-nesting bees need for their burrows. The other year-two question is what to do if honeybees start showing up in big numbers. Short answer — enjoy it. Honeybees at a school garden are a feature, not a problem. Are bees in a school pollinator garden a sting risk for students?

Essentially no, and the data supports that strongly. Foraging honeybees and native bees at flowers are not defensive — they are working. Stings almost always come from stepping on a bee in grass, disturbing a nest, or threatening a colony. Teach kids to watch where they step, move calmly around flowers, and respect the bees' space. That is the whole safety program.

What is the best time of year to plant a pollinator garden in Sacramento?

October and November, strongly preferred. California native plants establish through the winter rainy season, put down deep roots by spring, and enter their first summer already drought-hardened.
