Why We Do This

Because extermination isn't the answer

Bees pollinate roughly one-third of everything humans eat. Lose the bees and we lose the food supply. It's that direct.

Yet most people who discover a swarm call pest control because they don't know a free alternative exists — and the colony gets killed. We started The Bee Conservatory specifically to remove that barrier.

We fund this service through donations and grants precisely so cost is never a reason to exterminate. The bees get relocated to local apiaries where they contribute to pollination programs, honey production, and habitat restoration work.

Identification Guide

What are you looking at?

Not everything that buzzes is a honeybee. Here's a quick guide to the most common situations we get calls about.

Honeybee Swarm

Most common call

A cluster of thousands of bees hanging from a branch, fence, or structure. They look alarming but are actually at their most docile — they have no hive to defend. Swarms are temporary and will move on within 24–72 hours, but relocation is safer and keeps them out of your walls.

Established Hive

Act quickly

Bees entering and exiting a gap in a wall, eave, or tree cavity regularly. If they've been there for weeks, a full comb structure exists inside. Removal is more involved but still doable — and still free. The longer you wait, the larger the comb and the harder the extraction.

Bumblebees

Usually leave them

Rounder and fuzzier than honeybees, often nesting in the ground or in dense ground cover. Bumblebee colonies are small (50–500 bees) and naturally die off each fall. Unless the nest is in a high-traffic area, the best approach is usually to leave them alone for the season.

Wasps & Hornets

Not bees — refer out

Yellow jackets, paper wasps, and hornets are not bees — they don't pollinate and we don't remove them. They have slender, shiny bodies and a more aggressive temperament. Contact a licensed pest control company for wasp or hornet removal.

Common Questions

Before you call, read this

Most questions about our removal service come down to five things. If yours isn't covered here, just call.

Yes, 100% free. The Bee Conservatory is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded by donations and grants. We believe bee rescue should never cost a homeowner money — that cost creates a financial incentive to just call an exterminator instead. We remove that barrier entirely.

In most cases, no. Swarms are unusually calm because they have no hive or brood to defend. Established hives can be more protective, especially Africanized colonies, but our team assesses risk before every removal and uses full protective equipment. We will let you know if a situation requires extra precautions.

We aim to respond to every report within a few hours and schedule removal the same day or next day when possible. Urgent situations — bees inside a living space, near a child's play area, or involving Africanized bees — are prioritized. Call us directly at (916) 404-4294 for same-day needs.

The colony is transported to a local apiary partner or a habitat restoration site. Many swarms we collect become thriving managed hives. Bees that are in good health and easily hived are particularly valuable to beekeepers, so your call actually helps grow the local pollinator population.

Bees return to sites where a hive previously existed because of residual wax and pheromone scent. After removal, we strongly recommend sealing the entry point and, if accessible, removing leftover comb. We can advise on this during the visit. A properly sealed cavity rarely gets recolonized.
